Three new graphic novels continue to redefine comic book conventions

Although the state of the publishing industry has looked dark and gloomy as of late, one consistently bright spot has been in the area of graphic novels. Figures from industry website ICv2 report that sales of graphic novels have increased at least 5 percent every year since 2001, while countless indie (American Splendor, Persepolis) and mainstream (Hellboy, Watchmen) movies are mining the genre left and right. Even television is reaching for its cut, as zombie comics fans recently learned that The Walking Dead will be a series on cable TV network AMC.

Mysterious art

Some posts let the art do all the talking.
In this case, I’ll have to let the pieces below do just that
as this is all test art for a couple of projects that
may or may not see the light of day.

This one is not really what I wanted and may go into the trash:

This piece turned out more so how I wanted and will escape the garbage.

Early Fahrenheit sketches

Photobucket

I don’t know if I’m one of those people who can do a blog
post everyday of the week.

Some can and I don’t know how they do it. It can be very
time consuming unless you have an intern who’s willing to
show up at 6am and make the coffee.

At any rate, today’s post will be…brief.
Above are a few VERY early sketches for the “Fahrenheit”
graphic novel. I was still thinking about how I was going
to illustrate the book and how impressionistic I could
possibly get with the art and especially the colors.

Again, see more of my sketches and original art at the
Bergen Street signing this weekend if you can come by.

Projects That Never Were

Photobucket

Way back before I even knew
I’d be working on Fahrenheit 451, there
was talk of me adapting a Vampire book. No, it
wasn’t “Twilight” or “True Blood” or any of those!
Just a quiet little vampire novella. This and some other
sketches I did of the characters are all that remain of it.
I was doing these sketches when I got the call about 451
getting the "green light" so to speak. This loose look is
something I’d like to Use in a Graphic novel at some
point when it fits the project.

Joann Sfar draws like this all the time and I never
Tire of his work.
If you haven’t read Klezmer, by the way I recommend it!
(I’m not getting paid to say that!)
http://www.firstsecondbooks.com/klezmer.html

Photobucket

This second image is a bit darker and probably
the way the book would have ultimately looked.
The plot involved junkies and drugs. Vampires
on the down and outs.

On that thought,
good day!

Extra art

Not a warm up sketch this morning, but a sample of what you will see if you come by my signing at Bergen Street comics this coming Saturday the 29th of August.

I put together thumbnails and unused art that went into the making of Fahrenheit 451 the Graphic Novel. The below art is just a sample. That, and original art will be on display at the store. People will probably be a bit disappointed with the Black and white art from 451 as I used color and photo shop to produce the finished product. The line work looks so …empty to me.

Having said that, I look forward to seeing some of you there!

Warming up

As the name implies, I created this blog for art related posts.
Some days I will post warm up sketches that are nonsense, and other times
I may have something more…interesting to put up here involving work.

As for today: Nonsense images I make in the morning to get my hand going.
I had a red marker, some blue Doc Martin dyes and ink nearby.

A Bird? A Cyclops terrorizing a captive woman? I don’t know what the third panel is.

Ray talks...

About his graphic novel I illustrated:

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Kirkus Review

Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451: The Authorized Adaptation
Tim Hamilton
Hill and Wang/Farrar, Straus and Giroux / August / 9780809051007 / $30.00
For the first time, readers will experience the visual spectacle of Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, boldly illustrated by
Tim Hamilton (Treasure Island: The Graphic Novel, 2005, etc.). With a stamp of approval from Bradbury, who wrote
the introduction, Hamilton creates an eerie adaptation with a dramatic use of color that makes flames leap off the page.
“I’ve loved Bradbury since I first read A Sound of Thunder in seventh grade,” says Hamilton. “I wanted to adapt
Fahrenheit 451 as a modern-day fable, so I avoided using that ‘hyper-real’ look that’s popular in comics today. The story
takes place in an unnamed city and an unknown time period, so I wanted the art to reflect that ambiguity.” While
Hamilton is justifiably proud of his achievement, he also hopes the book will bring readers full-circle to Bradbury’s
body of work. “For all the hoopla about this book, I can’t improve on Ray’s story,” he says. “This is a different
animal. I hope that if younger people read this book as their first taste of Bradbury, they will seek out his other works
too. I hope they’ll take away what art and literature, in all its forms, have to offer.”

Why this?

People seem to be leaving Livejournal for Face book and Twitter where you can only post what you’re watching, having for dinner and in my case, Breakfast.

I’ve noticed that the slow and steady internet standby is …blogger. A place, unlike twitter and Face Book where I can post art and type as much B.S. as I see fit.

My fist post is just a place holder and general “yay, I have an art blog!” post.
I’ll simply remind anyone reading, that a preview of my adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451” will be featured in the June issue of Playboy.
It'll hit the stands around June 15th so I am told.

In the future…I’ll have more to say.
